Ethnic residential segregation is often explained with the claim that ‘immigrants don’t want to integrate—they prefer to stick together with co-ethnics’. By contrast, mixed neighbourhoods are seen as crucial for achieving social cohesion. In line with spatial assimilation theory there is a normative assumption that people interact with those living nearby. Tämän pro gradu tutkielman tarkoituksena on tarkastella turkkilaisen imaamin, Muhammed Fethullah Gülenin poliittista ideologiaa, hänen ympärilleen muodostunutta sosiaalista Gülen-liikettä eli hizmet-palveluliikettä ja näiden kahden asemaa Turkin politiikassa. Lisäksi pohditaan uskonnon ja sekulaarin taistelua, uskonnon merkitystä politiikassa ja erityisesti Turkissa. Työssä pyritään avaamaan myös Gülen-liikkeen tavoitteita ja pyrkimyksiä. This article focuses on the contribution of social workers to the Portuguese democratic transition in the 1970s. Their involvement in urban social mobilizations and in the cooperative movement will offer a perspective on the participation of social workers alongside the Revolutionary process and how they, through engaging with social mobilization, grass-roots initiatives and socio-political activism deployed practices consistent with radical social work frames. In this thesis I study the role of culture in the context of social movements. I argue that the role of concrete cultural forms in protest movements’ action has undergone a rather small interest in the Finnish study of social movements. I examine culture in social movements by looking at the “cultural turn” in social sciences, the rise of “new social movements” and through the theorizing of Pierre Bourdieu, Sarah Thornton and Ron Eyerman and Andrew Jamison.
